Dear Parents,
Happiest of Mondays to you! Did you not LOVE the heavy, wet
snow that we got last night? I love that
it clung to the trees and made things look almost magical! Yes, fall is my favorite season, but I love
when it snows (not in May however…).
We are just plugging along in Math
and continue to practice different strategies to help add and subtract. I really want the firsties to try to use these
strategies (drawing a picture, using their ten frames, using a number line,
doubles plus 1 or doubles plus 2, or mental math) to try solve their math
problems. It might be awkward for
awhile, but the more that they use those strategies, the easier and more
natural they will be to use.
We read a story, last week, called “The
Carpenter’s Gift” which is about the Rockefeller Christmas tree (it’s a great
little story, btw) and the very next day they actually lit the tree! I love it when those little great things
happen! If you want to check it out….here
is the link…
I hope the information that came
home today about our classroom gift exchange, made sense. Patrica Polacco is one of our favorite
authors and she lives in Michigan! Some of our favorite stories that we have
read are, “Chicken Sunday”, “Fiona’s Lace”, “The Mermaid’s Purse”, “John Philip
Duck”, “For the Love of Autumn”, “Because of Thursday”, “ThunderCake”, and
(though we haven’t read it yet) “An Orange for Frankie”. Again, if you have any questions, please don’t
hesitate because there are some books of hers that are not at a first grade
level.
We continue to learn about
different kinds of consonant blends!
This week, we are learning about final blends….nd, sk, st, mp. Quiz your
firstie with these different blends and have them write words. Any writing that you can do at home, is super helpful!
Blessings on your week!
Miss Gallagher
