Dear Parents,
Happy Reformation Day! What WOULD it have been like to live in the time of Martin Luther?  Hmmm…. He didn’t go along with what many others were thinking and doing….would you have gone along with what he was saying?  Would you have listened to him?  Or would you have continued to follow the Catholic church?  I am not going to get political at all here, but it IS something to ponder!

Last Friday, at our little harvest party, we did a science experiment, made a bat bookmark

(To go along with our song vowel bat!!), tried our little hands at picking out little flies and bugs out of the spider web WITHOUT touching the yarn
(Though, because nothing really happened when they touched the yarn, the firsties weren’t really making a huge effort…LOL!) and handing out our treats  I think that a good time was had by all!

Below are the pictures of our science experiment…..I put a candy pumpkin in equal parts of different kinds of liquids.

                                                          The first one was water

then milk (look at the bottom of the jar)

                                                                         then oil

                                                                 and finally vinegar!

The pictures were taken after about 2 hours of the candy sitting in the liquids, but the students started to notice changes happening to the pumpkins after about 10 minutes….The interesting thing (to me anyways) was that the pumpkin changed the quickest in the water…..hmmm……

Many thanks to Mrs. Freehling and Mrs. Johnson for coming to help out!  Thanks also, for sending in treats to share!  The firsties loved to pass them out and to receive them as well!

This week is going to be a short week because there is no school on Friday.  Don’t forget that our tests will be on Thursday!

Blessings on your week and I will see you all very soon!

Dear Parents,
Happy Wednesday!  Brr….!  It’s chilly outside today!  To be clear, I DID say that I like fall, but this feels a little chiller than fall!

***I started writing this BEFORE it snowed!  Ugh!***

Yesterday in Religion we learned about the final plague that God handed down to Pharaoh and the Egyptians…that was the killing of the first-born sons.  God told Moses that he had to kill (sacrifice) a perfect and spotless lamb, and then take the blood from the lamb and paint it on the doorframes of the houses where the Israelites were living.  That was the sign for the angel that God sent, to pass over their houses.  We talked about how Jesus has different names; Lord, Christ, Son of God….but another name is Lamb of God.  Jesus, the Lamb of God, was sacrificed, shed His blood, to save us!  This is a little difficult connection for firsties to make, so reiterate it at home!  Talk about Jesus as the Lamb of God!  Tomorrow we are going to “paint” our doorway with “blood”. You will be able to see it next week at Parent/Teacher Conferences.

The 5th and 6th grade presented the Chapel service today and they taught us about Martin Luther!  Ask your firstie what they remember!  We are going to learn a little more about him in class, but watch for a special surprise to come home soon...

Here are more pictures of our pumpkin adjectives....see if you can guess what the face of the pumpkin is showing...
Sad

Pretty

We are continuing to practice our fluency in reading!  How is that going at home?  From now on, each week I will be sending home stories for your firstie to read to you, in the little "take home story" bags.  Please keep them until Friday, so that your kiddo can practice reading the stories in there more than once.  Fluency...fluency...fluency!

Because of the Harvest Dinner preparations, we will be eating in our classrooms for the rest of the week.

Book orders are due Friday!

Stay warm!

Dear Parents,
It's fall! It finally feels like fall!  (Happy dance, happy dance!) It is my ABSOLUTE favorite season!  The crisp fall air, Friday night football games, apples, the leaves changing colors, warm and cozy clothes, bonfires, etc....I just LOVE it all! I am SO thankful to live in a part of the country that gets to experience this part of God's beautiful creation!

In Religion this morning, we continued to learn more about Moses and Pharaoh.  We learned that God took care of His people and Moses during a very difficult time and how He used Moses to be a leader.  We then talked about the different leaders that God puts into our lives.  Did you see the picture that your firstie brought home today?  What did you see on the front?  A cross?  The cross is a reminder of the ultimate leader that we have in our lives, Jesus.  Thank God we have Him to lead us and help us to learn and grow!

For spelling this week, our words are a review of all of the short vowels. I dictated the words to them today (without reviewing them at all beforehand), and they did quite well!  Thanks for continuing to work your kiddo at home!

In Social Studies, we began a new unit about locations and where we live!  Our city, our state, our country, the continent that we live on….the last one being a little tricky for firsties to remember.  We watched a video to help us remember and you can view it by clicking on the link below…

Good stuff!

In the parent letter that I sent home today, I forgot to mention that our class Book Order is due THIS Friday.  If you going to write a check, please make it out to Scholastic Book Clubs.  Don’t forget that books make great gifts and even little stocking stuffers!

Blessings! See you in the morning!
